Service

Since our founding over a century ago, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has developed numerous community-based partnerships,  programs and initiatives that make a difference in people’s lives.

Whether helping the community through volunteer service or raising funding for important causes, Zetas give unceasingly of our time and resources. The Norwalk Zetas are proud torch bearers of that tradition. We understand that service to the community will be our greatest legacy.

Zetas Helping Other People Excel — Z-HOPE

Through the sorority’s signature Z-HOPE – Zetas Helping Other People Excel service program, Zeta Phi Beta takes service directly to groups in the community that we can help. It’s in that vein, the Norwalk Zetas, support clients of the Westport-based Gillespie Center which provides food and emergency shelter for people who don’t have homes of their own. On a quarterly basis, including on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we donate our time, non-perishable food items and drinks to help stock the center’s soup kitchen. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we even served clients our home-cooked meals.

Open Doors

In Norwalk, we support Open Doors, a housing and homeless service organization that provides shelter, food and resources to people in need of help.

We have donated cleaning kits, bathroom items and gift cards to people who were transitioning from the shelter to their own homes.

Our Commitment to Maternal Health

Zetas, of course, have a history of service. In 1972, for example, Zeta Phi Beta began an enduring partnership with the March of Dimes through the organizations’ joint Stork’s Nest program because we want healthy moms to deliver healthy babies. That’s not a guaranteed outcome in the U.S., especially not for Black mothers. So through education and incentives, we work together to promote prenatal care and encourage healthy behaviors.

Part of our work includes raising money for this important cause. And so, every year, through Alpha Alpha Rho Zeta, Dove Love for Babies, the Norwalk Zetas raise money for the March of Dimes programs through our participation in the March for Babies walk.

Advocating for Breast Cancer Awareness and Health Equity

And because service is in our blood, we – along with our youth affiliate, the Archonette Club,  help the American Cancer Society raise awareness and money for breast cancer research each year by sporting a little pink and participating in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraising walk.

We know that people in the Black community and other communities of color often lack access to care, resources and testing which can lead to negative health outcomes. So, our goal is to educate our community about breast and other cancers and to provide the resources and tools people need for optimal health.

Supporting Pediatric Cancer and Autism Awareness

Like  members of Zeta Phi Beta around the world, the Norwalk Zetas also work to raise awareness about pediatric cancers in support of Zeta’s partnership with St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, as well as the sorority’s Autism Awareness Education program and Zeta’s partnership with Micah’s Voice. Founded by our brother, member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and member of Boys II Men, Shawn Stockman and his wife, Sharhonda Stockman, Micah’s Voice provides financial assistance to families affected by autism.
